TPG’s David Lipsky Knocking on PGA Tour Card Door

One of the COVID 19- induced adjustments to the golf schedule has been how players earn a playing privileges card through performance on the PGA Tour Korn Ferry. In a normal year, the top 10 players at the end of the golf year would secure a card, but Tour leadership combined 2020 and 2021 into one consolidated year.

TPG Player David Lipsky – 4 time winner on the European and Asian Tours- and now playing his rookie season on the PGA Tour Korn Ferry—stepped up his game in the face of these challenges. David won at San Antonio in his first year on the KF Tour, with a 25 underpar performance, 4 clear of the field, and was in 10th place on the KF list after the 2020 season-ending KF Tour Championship.

Ordinarily this would have punched David’s card for PGA Tour playing privileges in 2021, except for the coronavirus-adjusted schedule. But David did not let disappointment slow him down.

David worked on his game in late 2020 (including continuing the same training available via tourprepgolf.com), then mapped his 2021 schedule. David retains playing privileges on the European Tour, where he is a 2-time winner, and headed to the Middle East for the European Tour’s kick-off events- Abu Dhabi HSBC ( Tyrell Hatton winner); Omega Dubai Desert Classic ( Paul Casey), Saudi International ( Dustin Johnson). .

Strong performance in those events placed David #10 in the Race to Dubai—-the ET’s counterpart to the PGA Tour’s Fed Ex Cup. This earned David a coveted position in 2021’s first World Golf Championship event- WGC Workday Championship. WGC’s are limited-field events with increased purses and increased Fed Ex Cup & Race to Dubai points. The 2021 event was held at the world-famous The Concession golf club in Bradenton, FL, a Jack Nicklaus- Tony Jacklin design commemorating Nicklaus’ world-class Ryder Cup sportsmanship gesture of conceding a non-gimme putt to Jacklin on the last hole, giving the European team a tie in the competition. The USA retained the Cup under the rules of the competition.

David had a solid performance at the WGC Workday event ( Collin Morikawa, winner) and now looks forward to the PGA KF Tour resumption at Chitimacha Louisiana Open/Mistras March 18.
